Dakhla

Dakhla, according to my opinion the most beautiful oasis in egypt, is from east to west around 80 km long and up to 25 km broad. With around 80,000 people living there, Dakhla is the biggest oasis. Dakhla consists of 16 different villages and cities. One of them is El Qasr, which is worth a visit, and then there is Mut, the main capital of Dakhla.
People here also live from agriculture, which is supported also by the New Valley Project. Besides that, Dakhla is famous since ancient times for its crafts.
People live in Dakhla since prehistoric time. Scientists found here bones from elephants, ostrichs, zebras and gazelles, which proof that there must have been a savannah with a lot of water, probably around 5,000 b.c. Furthermore, it is pretty sure that people from Dakhla were trading with people from the nile valley in the Old Kingdom.
Although Dakhla can look back to a long, long history there are only a few ancient sights worth being seen. Visitors interested in history could visit the tempel of Deir El Haggar, the roman tombs of Mozwka (which were closed when we visited Dakhla the last time) and the ruins of Kellis. Worth a visit is the old city of El Qasr with its narrow streets and the small but very interesting museum about life in Dakhla.
In Dakhla you will also find some hotels and camps. Most of them are in or around Mut, which is the main capitel, or in El Qasr. In Mut there are also some different restaurants and shops.
If you really want to discover Dakhla take a walk around through the gardens and fields of Dakhla. With their green color they make up an amazing contrast to the red rocks which shine in the background....
Dakhla is for me the most beautiful oasis, especially because of its beautiful landscape...
