SamySafari - Lexicon Farafra Farafra lies around 200 km southwest of Bahariya. It is therefore the closest oasis to the White Desert. Farafra is from north to south around 200 km long and 90 km broad. With this size it is the second biggest oasis, but with only 20,000 people living there it is the smallest. The people of Farafra also live mainly from agriculture. Farafra is delivering dates, olives, wheat, beans (foul), rice and apricots to the nile valley. Besides that people grow also a lot of fruits and vegetables for their daily life (like lemons, tomatoes, potatoes). Agriculture is very important for Farafra and because of the New Valley Project (which includes Farafra, Dakhla and Kharga and which aim is better water supply and therefore more fertile areas and agriculture - as an alternative for people from the nile) there were digged a lot of new springs to gain more fertile land for agriculture. Besides some exceptions travellers will not find a lot of facilities for them. There are only a few hotels and sights worth being seen. Nevertheless, you should take a break in Farafra. Have a look to interesting agriculture methods or take a bath in one of the hot springs (especially nice in winter time). You should not miss visiting Badrs museum (Farafra Art Museum). It is really worth being visited... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
