SamySafari - Lexicon Kharga Kharga is from north to south around 200 km long and from 15 to 40 km broad. With this size it is the biggest of the four oases Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla and Kharga. With 70,000 people living in Kharga it is only the second biggest. Kharga is only around 180 km away from the nile and therefore it is the oasis which was influencend by the culture of the nile the most. People here also live from agriculture. Main crops, which are delivered to the nile valley, are dates, wheat and rice. Besides that, people grow lemons, oranges and other fruits as well as a variety of vegetables for their daily life. It is for sure that people live here since the Old Kingdom. Furthermore, there are hints, that there were also people in Kharga before that time. Kharga is worth a visit for its ancient sights. One of them is the tempel of Hibis. Besides that, there is the tempel of Nadura, the tempel of El Guita and the tempel of Saijan. Furthermore, there are some castles built by romans. You should not miss the area of El Bagawat which is a well-known christian necropolis in Egypt. There you will find around 263 grave chapels from the 4th until the 8th century. Not far away there are the ruins of Deir Kashif, which were also built during christian time in Egypt. Furthermore, there are the ruins of Dush, which was an important caravan stop in ancient times. In Kharga city there is a museum, a dates factory and the old city with its souk, which are worth being seen. In Kharga you can also find different hotels, camps, restaurants and shops. Although there are a lot of sights in Kharga, which are worth a visit, the oasis itself is not as charming as the other oases.
